Motorized shades.

Shades, blinds, and drapery that move on a schedule or with a scene: glare off the screens in the afternoon, privacy at dusk, and the view back in the morning.

Why motorize shades at all?

Because the ones you have to reach for never get used. Motorized shades follow the sun, protect furniture and art from fading, hold heat in winter, and let one keypad set a whole room, including the windows nobody can reach.

Questions worth asking early.

Can shades be added to an existing home?

Yes. Battery and rechargeable motors avoid opening walls, and hard-wired motors are worth it where a window is permanent and reachable during a renovation.

How quiet are they?

Quiet enough to sleep through. Motor choice, fabric weight, and the pocket detail decide it, which is why those choices are made before anything is ordered.
